What Is an Electrical Panel and How Does the Process Work?

An electrical panel, also known as a breaker box, distribution board, or load center, is the main hub that controls and distributes electricity throughout a structure. It houses circuit breakers or fuses that protect individual circuits from overloads, short circuits, or electrical faults. The system receives power from the utility service line and allocates that energy to branch circuits, which then deliver electricity to outlets, lights, and appliances.

The process of electrical panel installation or upgrade begins with a full load calculation to determine energy needs, followed by selecting the appropriate amperage panel. Outdated fuse boxes or undersized breaker panels are replaced with modern, NEC-compliant systems to meet today’s power demands. Grounding and bonding are verified, AFCI/GFCI protection is installed where required, and surge protection may also be integrated. The panel is then mounted, circuits connected, and each breaker is labeled for clarity. Once complete, licensed technicians test for continuity, load balance, and proper grounding before final inspection.
